DIY Doctor Play Kit.

Hunter and Hope are really into pretend play at the moment, so I thought it was time to introduce Him and her to my favourite roll play toy as a child, the Doctor Play set. I had a Fisher Price one as a girl, and it really got a workout. Instead of buying her a whole lot of plastic stuff, I rummaged around in a few drawers and cupboards and put together a fun set that cost me next to nothing.
Apart from gathering supplies, I made a gauze surgical mask.
Bandages
-Plastic Syringe
-Plastic Tweezers from a dressing kit
-Tongue Depressor
-Stethoscope (I bought this off ebay for $4, it’s not excellent quality but it does work. Make sure you supervise your child as yelling or banging on stethoscopes can cause hearing damage.)
Other items you may want to include:
-Bandaids
-Cotton Balls or swabs
-Eye Patch
-Note pad and Pen
To make the surgical mask
You will need:
Cotton gauze 8″x10″
2 x elastic pieces 10″ long
safety pin
Sewing machine and general sewing supplies

This size suits a small child, you may want to adjust the measurements for older kids.
How to:
1. Cut your gauze square and elastic.
2. Fold the gauze in half and sew along the dotted line.
3. Turn inside out and press.
4. Fold open sides over twice as pictured and press.
5. Stitch along dotted line.
6. Fasten your safety pin to the end of the elastic piece and thread each through the side tubes.
7. Tie off the ends.
8. Move the elastic around to hide the knot.
To decorate the case:
-This was an old case I had kicking around the sewing room, if you don’t want to buy one you can use a lunch box or even a biscuit tin.
-Trace a circle around a bowl or plate onto some adhesive paper.
-Draw a large cross and colour in with a marker pen.
-Cut out and stick onto case or tin.DIY-Doctor-Play-Kit

Fast Easy Halloween Costumes.

ImageImageImage                                                                                                                               Sometimes even though we have been given constant reminders from our kid’s,who are looking forward to a big candy haul.Sometimes halloween sneaks up on us,but do not let the looming deadline scare you.I have found some fast, affordable costumes you can put together in a hurry. There is also a few that will take a little time.

Be a mummy wrap the person in gauze leaving the face out so it doesn’t obstruct anyones vision. Then you can add some green paint to splotch around to make it look like mold. You can also crack open a glow stick, and splash it around the gauze and you will glow for a few hours.

Another fast one is to be static cling.Dress in all white or black sweats,or any colour you choose. Then using safety pins attach socks, undies, washclothes, etc all over your outfit. You can even add a bounce sheet  in there.Use hairspray and tease your hair up straight,to make it stand up.

If your child has a bodysuit in pink, brown,or white just add a powder puff to the backside as a rabbit’s tail. You can also use a large pom- pom as the tail.Make some bunny ears out of construction paper and a plastic head band.Fast ,easy, and cheap.

Make a princess tu-tu from strips of waxed paper, plastic bags, and mesh onion bags.Knot the plastic bags onto a pink headband.Use a coloured body suit and tights add a tiara from the dollar store, another cheap, fast costume.

Using cardboard boxes the possibilities are endless for costumes.Cut arm and head holes out of a box, remember the shorter the box the easier it is to walk in.Paint the box white and then add some black dots with acyrilic paint to make a dice.

Do the same to the box to be a rubix cube, cut the arms and head holes out. Then using coloured construction paper cut into squares measure to be sure everything is even. Then attach the squares to the box using black electrical,or duct tape. This will give the look of a black line on the rubix cube while securing the squares at the sametime.

Homemade costumes look better, and are alot more fun!

Edible Slimy Worms Recipe.

Image While I was searching around I found these disgusting, slimy, life like gelatin worms. So cute, and yet so  gross.Great for your next halloween party.Imagine the looks on your guests faces when they see a big bowl of these slimy critters.Especially when they learn there edible, don’t know if I could bring myself to eat one.I will definitely  be doing this recipe, just to see the reactions on the kid’s faces.I can’t wait! For this recipe it’s important to use a tall slim container to hold the straws.Use a 1 litre milk or juice carton that has a four cup capacity. The straws must fit tightly together so the jello does not run out of the straws before the jello sets.Buy straws with the flexible neck, they give the worms a more realistic look. The recipe will make 100 worms. In a medium size heat safe mixing bowl, stir together 3/4 oz of unflavoured gelatin, and 1 package of purple gelatin( 6 oz.)Poor 3 cups of boiling water over the gelatin mix, stirring gelatin ,until dissolved.Cool gelatin until slightly warm.Stir 3/4 cups of whipping cream into the gelatin mixture.Stir in geen food colouring about 10 drops ,or until the gelatin gets a purple-brown-grey colour. With 100 straws fully extended and snug in your container, pour the gelatin mix over the straws, filling the container.Cover the container and chill for eight hours. You can can make these two days in advance, and store this way. When set remove straws from the container cutting or tearing a disposable container is the easiest.Run hot tap water over 4-5 straws at a time for a couple of seconds.Press with your fingers, and remove the worms from the straws.Set them on wax paper to set up.Do this until all worms are removed from the straws. Then chill covered on wax paper for 2 hours. Then serve in a chilled bowl to the disgust of your guests! I hope you have enjoyed this one,I sure have.Sick sense of humour huh!

New uses for Old Things.

I thought this was a really nifty idea.Turn a cuboard door into a tray. You will need an old cuboard door, give it a coat of house paint any colour you choose. When it is dry trace your pattern onto it with a pencil.Paint over the lines with a different colour of acyrilic paint.Apply thick so you only need one coat of paint.Let dry ,then erase the pencil lines. You will need 2 dawer pulls big enough too fit your hands, spray paint them on both sides.Use wood filler fo the holes on the back where the hinges were.Let dry and sand them.Touch up with a few coats of paint.Attach felt pads on the bottom at each corner.Measue, mark and drill your holes for handles.Screw the handles in ,and then your done.Such a cool idea,I am definitely going to try this.Good-bye bathroom cuboards.Image

Strawberry Brazilian Lemonade.

Well yesterday was the first day of summer, and boy was it a scorcher.I’m not complaining it certainly beats the white stuff. So we took the day off from school work, and the kid’s played in the pool most of the day. Here is a great recipe for strawberry brazilian lemonade. The kid’s loved it,and it’s chalked full of nutrition. It was a great way too cool off. They all sat under a shade tree sipping their strawberry lemonade. It was delicious, give it a try.You will need 4 limes cut into chunks,6 cups of cold water, and 1 cup of sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and strawberries.Mix sugar and water together until sugar is dissolved. Then add 1/2 of the sugar water to your blender with 1/2 the limes. Then pulse the mixture about 5 times. Then pour through a fine mesh strainer into the pitcher you will be serving. Now add the other half into the blender and repeat the process.Add frozen strawberries in it about 6.Then enjoy!
