An external expert will be brought into Hamilton General hospital to investigate the deaths of two young mothers who died after being sent home despite suffering flu-like symptoms. Twenty-six year old Ashley Coville was newly pregnant with her second child when she died on Boxing Day from what her husband was informed was pneumonia. Mid-January, twenty-four year old Jennifer Ryan died after being dismissed from hospital. Her family were told she died of meningitis. Dr. Richard McLean, Executive Vice-President of Medical Affairs for Hamilton Health Sciences, has said the two deaths being so close to each other is unusual, which is what prompted the investigation. McLean added that an internal review found the Emergency Department could have done nothing differently to save the previously healthy victims.
